Course Descriptions
SCRN 3001 | Special Topics: Hands-On Film Production
Glen Pitre
To find out which real-world crew position suits your interests, temperament, and abilities, this course lets you specialize on one of the many specific jobs on set --- camera operator or make up person, production coordinator or special effects wizard, etc. --- while earning a later-help-you- get-hired film credit on a professional film featuring the supernatural creatures of Louisiana folklore.
SCRN 3507 | Comedy in American Cinema
Kalling Heck
Comedy has been a fundamental American movie genre since the earliest days of cinema. Despite this, comedic films are often overlooked in discussions of the value, place, and potential of the cinema—particularly when they are first released. This class will seek to correct this oversight by rigorously engaging with comedies in the hopes of developing a deeper understanding of the role of humor in the history and theory of the cinema, and indeed in humanistic inquiry more broadly. Through weekly screenings, readings and responses, this class will consider how and why comedy has played (and continues to play) a central role in cinema’s development.
SCRN 4012 | Advanced Film Directing
Glen Pitre
Students will explore the creative frontiers of film production by each taking on specific scenes or aspects of a wild, lively multi-screen film featuring the traditional Louisiana versions of werewolves, elves, witches, and the like. Under the guidance of internationally renowned film director Screen Arts professional-in-residence Glen Pitre, here’s a chance to show off your talent, hone your skills, and build your directing reel.
ANTH 4083 | Ancient Maya in the Media
Heather McKillop
Through this course, students will watch and evaluate documentary-style films on the ancient Maya. We discuss how the film communicates archaeology to various audiences through film techniques, music, narrators, and more.
CLST 2070 | Ancient World in the Cinema
Mason Barto
How does mythology respond to the customs and belief systems of a society? Ancient myths of voyage and return show how ancient Mediterranean societies experienced their own culture and its intersection with the world beyond. This class is an exploration of Greek and Roman mythological texts and modern film narratives which together demonstrate a link between ancient and modern patterns of expression, themes, and narrative structures. Students will engage in discussion and written exercises to examine the way storytellers and audiences connect in different places, times, and through different media (speech, writing, film).
