Grade Exclusion Petition
College of Engineering Instructions for Processing a Grade Exclusion Petition (GEP)
Effective Summer 2025 with the introduction of Workday Student, the grade exclusion
policy in its previous form no longer exists. Below are two sections from the “Academic
Regulations” chapter of the 2025–2026 LSU General Catalog that explain relevant policy
going forward. In brief, when a course is repeated, only the most recent grade will count toward GPA and degree requirements, even if that grade is lower than the previous one.
These policy changes are not retroactive. They apply only when a course is repeated
in summer 2025 or subsequent semesters/modules.
Undergraduate Credit for Repeated Courses Policy
A student may not repeat a course in which a grade of “C-” or better has been earned unless the catalog description indicates that the course may be repeated for credit, or the student’s dean approves the repetition for some special reason. If a student registers for a course in violation of the above policy, the student’s dean may deny degree credit for the course.
Unless otherwise stated in the course description, credit will be awarded only once for a course that is repeated. When students are permitted to repeat for credit a course previously taken, only the most recent grade will be used towards determining degree credit and applied towards academic requirements. The last grade earned in a repeated course will be the grade applied toward graduation requirements, even if it is lower than the previous grade. Similarly, only the last grade earned in the repeated course will be used in GPA calculations. If a student receives a failing grade when repeating a course for which a passing grade had been previously earned, the student will lose the credit previously earned for the course.
All course attempts will be recorded on the LSU transcript.
Undergraduate Repeat Restrictions
Students who earn a D+ or lower in a course at LSU have the opportunity to repeat the course for credit. Once repeated, the student may not re-enroll in the course (third attempt) without prior approval from the dean of the student’s major college.
Students may choose to repeat courses at other institutions; however, if any of the student’s prior attempts at LSU resulted in an F grade, the student must obtain permission from their major college prior to repeating the course at an external institution. Once repeated, courses transferred back into the University as direct equivalents will follow the standard repeat policy, resulting in the most recent attempt being the only grade counted in GPA calculations. If that grade is from an external institution, the student’s institutional GPA and hours earned will no longer include the prior course attempt. Note that any course that is repeated at an external institution is subject to review by student’s major college/academic unit to determine academic requirement applicability and/or inclusion in all GPA calculations. It is always in the student’s best interest to inquire with their academic advisor prior to repeating courses at external institutions.
Undergraduate “F” Grade Policy
Students who fail a course twice at LSU may not retake the course without approval
from the dean of the student’s major college. Appeals to enroll in a course after having failed the course twice need to be initiated
immediately following the semester or summer term in which the second failing grade
was earned, but no later than the first class day of the next semester or summer term
enrolled.
Students who receive an “F” in a course must repeat the course within the campuses
of the university in order to receive credit and quality points for it. With prior
concurrence of the chair of the department in which the course is offered and the
dean of the college in which the student is enrolled, credit and quality points may
be approved in individual cases for courses repeated outside the campuses of the university.
