Particle Size Analysis

This is a close-up of the Anton Paar PSA1090L/D particle size analyzer.

more details

Particle size is an important parameter in many aspects of chemical processes (synthesis, catalysis), biological, pharmaceutical and materials science applications, and engineering. Sample types of interest can include liposomes, exosomes, (metallic) nano particles, sand, cement, and even saw dust.

Depending on the material, particle diameter and research aim, the analysis can be run either with the sample dispersed in a solvent or in dry state. LSU SIF is hosting two different Anton Paar instruments for this purpose, the Litesizer 500 (dynamic light scattering) and the PSA 1090 L/D (laser diffraction). Besides of particle size distributions, the Litesizer 500 can be used for electrophoretic light scattering, and for the measurement of transmittance and refractive index of liquids i.e. dispersions.

Anton Paar Litesizer 500

Features

The Litesizer 500 instrument is designed for characterizing particles in liquid dispersions using:

  • Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) for particle size range 0.3nm – 10µm
  • Electrophoretic Light Scattering (ELS) for particle size range 3.8nm – 100µm
  • Static Light Scattering (SLS) for particle size ranging up to 40nm
  • Measurement of sample transmittance
  • Measurement of refractive index

Description

The Particle Size Analyzer PSA 1090 L/D instrument is designed for measuring the size of particles ranging from 0.04µm to 500µm, either dispersed in liquid or in powder/granulate form, using laser diffraction spectroscopy (LDS).
